Biography

Born in Empoli on 30th June 1959 he holds a degree in Law from the University of Florence.

He was elected for the first time to the Florence City Council in 1990, serving during time as chairman of the Commission for the drafting of the statute and as Councillor several times, from Mobility to Public Works, from Sport to Florentine Popular Traditions, from Toponomy to International Relations, and finally to Culture from September 2008 to June 2009.

In 2009 he was designated as President of the Florence City Council, having received the highest number of votes in the municipal election. A man of culture and history enthusiast, over time he has held the positions of: President of the Stibbert Museum, President of the ‘Museo dei Ragazzi’ association, President of the Regional Federation of Historical Games; President of the Italian Dante Society, President of the Dante House Museum and President of the Friends of Museums.

He is the author of numerous essays and books on various sports and cultural topics. His books include ‘Firenze e la Fiorentina’, with which the author takes us on an unprecedented tour of the events that saw him as a central figure in the critical moments of the Club Viola (Florence football team), culminating with the bankruptcy of 2002 and the reconstruction of the club as founder together with the then mayor of Florence Leonardo Domenici, before it was sold to the Della Valle group. Among others, the book ‘Festività Fiorentine’, co-authored with historians Luciano Artusi and Anita Valentini, ‘Il Corteo della Repubblica Fiorentina’ with Luca Giannelli and ‘Il centocinquinquantesimo anniversario del plebiscito in Toscana per l’unità d’Italia’ (11-12 March 1860) with Anita Valentini. In 2012, he published ‘Firenze Giorno per Giorno’ with the Polistampa publishing house. In December 2018, his latest volume ‘La Toscana Giorno per Giorno’ was published.

He was elected to the Regional Council of Tuscany for the first time in the regional elections of 28th and 29th March 2010 as a candidate in the Florence constituency on the PD-Riformisti Toscani list. Re-elected in the 2015 elections, he was appointed as President of the Regional Council .

He has always been involved in the world of sport and has held the following positions: – Provincial CONI, Italian Olympic Games Committee, delegate for Florence, office confirmed in 2017 – member of the CONI National Council, office confirmed in 2017 – Vice-president of the AONI, Italian National Olympic Academy – Honorary President of the FAE, European Athletics Federation.

At the regional consultations of 20th and 21st September 2020, he stood as candidate for Regional President supported by a list including Progressive Green Europe, Italia Viva +Europa, Orgoglio Toscana per Giani Presidente, Partito Democratico, Sinistra Civica Ecologista, Svolta!. He was elected with more than 860,000 votes, corresponding to 48.63%.
