Platforms and data in the City of Piraeus

The City of Piraeus has made several steps in the past five years towards becoming an intelligent city. As part of a larger Integrated Territorial Investment program, the amount of approximately 6M€ was directed solely to digital actions. The aim was to make the city more attractive both to citizens and visitors, offering amongst others novel ICT services. Furthermore, other funds became available from the city’s participation in European programs (UIA, Horizon 2020 and more). Through all available funding opportunities and based on the Municipality’s Digital Strategy, several areas of interest were touched, as cultural heritage (portal and digitization of the city’s records, library and art gallery), the city’s operation monitoring (platform), information gathering through IoT sensors (climate, pollution, waste, energy, illegal parking, air quality and more), the Destination Management System (DMS platform) for tourism, cyber and urban security and safety, the Municipality’s internal operation through the use of an ERP.
Based on the above we will try to briefly present the story of these last 5 years, from funding, to planning, procuring and eventually implementing all these solutions. Finally, we will present the key platforms and data collected, their usefulness and role in the decision making process.
